The Infernal Device, based on the novel by Michael Kurland, conceived by and developed for the stage by The Acting Ensemble's Artistic Director, James Geisel, is the first MainStage production of The Acting Ensemble's Summer Season.

There are two sides to every story; was Professor Moriarty the heinous villain Sherlock Holmes made him out to be, or could there be a different side to him? Moriarity learns of a dangerous adversary plotting to topple the British monarchy. The intrigue places Moriarty in mortal jeopardy, forcing him to collaborate with his nemesis Sherlock Holmes. Ethical opposites, can they join forces in time to stop what could be the greatest crime against the British Empire?

Also directed by James Geisel, the cast includes a talented line-up of AE's finest members: Rick Ellis, Phil Kwiecinski, Greg Melton, Mark Moriarty, and Crystal Ryan! The Infernal Device takes place June 15-16-17, 2012 in The Moreau Center for the Performing Arts on Saint Mary's Campus. Admission is $18 or $15 for Seniors/Student. The Infernal Device was the first book to appear in Michael Kurland's acclaimed series of novels featuring the Professor. Originally published in 1978, it was a finalist of the Edgar Award. Following the book's success, Kurland published the second in the series Death by Gaslight in 1982. They were followed by The Great Game (2001) and The Empress of India (2006). The fifth novel in the series is to be published soon. Twice nominated for an Edgar Award, along with the Edgar Allen Poe Award, author Michael Kurland published his first novel in 1964 and has gone on to write over 30 novels including the science fiction novel The Unicorn Girl and Button Bright. He is also the author of the Lord Darcy Series of mystery novels. He has written many non-fiction books including How to Solve a Murder: the Forensic Handbook and Irrefutable Evidence: Adventures in Forensic Science. His anthologies of stores are collected in Sherlock Holmes: The Hidden Years (2003) and The American Years (2009) as well as My Sherlock Holmes: Untold Stories of the Great Detective (2003.)
